Why aren't words starting with capitals corrected mid-sentence?
Why aren't words starting with capitals corrected mid-sentence?
By default, the style lexicons in your linguistic preferences are turned on.
MerciApp treats words starting with a capital letter mid-sentence as proper nouns: think city names, people, brands, and so on. That's why they won't get flagged during correction.
This default behavior is actually there to help you: it prevents proper nouns from showing up as "unknown words" and can even suggest the right spelling for them.
Example:
The Véolia logo has just been changed > The Veolia logo has just been changed
Enable correction for capitalized words
Want MerciApp to correct all words starting with a capital mid-sentence? You can easily change that! Here's how:
Step 1: Head to your linguistic preferences
- Go to your MerciApp space: https://web.merci-app.com/
- Select Linguistic Preferences in the Correct section
- Under the Style tab, uncheck all 4 lexicon preferences
Step 2: Adjust the new preference
- Switch to the Spelling tab
- Look for the option: "Ignore words whose first letter is capitalized (except at the start of a sentence)"
- Uncheck it if you want every capitalized word to be corrected
Good to know before you change this
Upsides of turning it off:
- Every word starting with a capital gets detected and corrected
- You get more granular control over your corrections
One important downside:
- MerciApp will flag all capitalized words including proper nouns like city names, people, and brands that naturally use capitals
- MerciApp will no longer suggest corrections for proper nouns
