How to turn a web page into a local app (PWA) to use MerciApp locally?

MerciApp runs as a Google Chrome extension — which means it works great on any web page you open in your browser. But what about desktop apps like Outlook, Slack, Teams, or Notion?

Good news: most of these tools have a web version you can open right in Chrome. You can launch them in a dedicated Chrome window. No address bar, no tabs, and an experience that feels just like a native app, with MerciApp fully up and running.

How to turn a web page into a local app (PWA) to use MerciApp locally?

Chrome has a built-in feature that lets you turn any web page into a standalone "pseudo-app": it opens in its own window, without tabs, just like a regular desktop app. And since MerciApp lives in Chrome, it stays active in that window too.

Here's how to set it up:

  • Open Google Chrome and navigate to the web version of the tool you want to install.
  • Click the menu (three vertical dots) in the top-right corner of Chrome.
  • Select Cast, save and share, then Install page as app…. (On some websites, you may see an Install button directly in the address bar, use that instead!)
  • Give your shortcut a name (e.g. "Outlook").
  • Click Install.

What you can do in that window

Once your local web app is up, you get the full MerciApp experience: Correct with real-time autocorrection and alerts, Transform to rephrase your messages, and Expand to insert your snippets with a keyboard shortcut. It feels like a native app, with MerciApp right there alongside you.

A few tips to get the most out of it

Want quick access to your web app? After opening it for the first time, pin it to your taskbar (Windows) or your Dock (Mac) with a right-click on the icon.

To launch the app automatically when you log in, open Chrome, go to chrome://apps, right-click your app's icon, and select Launch at startup.

Heads up: This works with Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge (both run on the Chromium engine). Firefox doesn't support this feature natively.

Keep in mind: This is a workaround, not a full replacement for native desktop apps. Some features, like notification badges on the app icon, may not be available. That said, for day-to-day writing and messaging, it does the job really well.
