How do I choose the regional correction variant for each language?
Do you write in American English rather than British English? Prefer Brazilian Portuguese over European Portuguese? With the new Multilingual tab, you can pick the regional correction variant for each foreign language, so your suggestions match the way you actually write.
To set your regional variants, follow these steps:
- Open your Language preferences.
- Click the Multilingual tab.
- Find the language you want to set up in the table of supported languages: French, English, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian.
- In the right-hand column, open the dropdown for that language and pick the variant you want.
- Your choice is saved automatically and applied right away: the flag on the row updates to match the country of the variant you selected.
Available variants by language:
- English: English (United States), English (United Kingdom), English (Canada) — default: English (United States).
- German: German (Germany), German (Switzerland) — default: German (Germany).
- Portuguese: Portuguese (Portugal), Portuguese (Brazil) — default: Portuguese (Portugal).
- Spanish: Spanish (Spain).
Your choice is tied to your account: it reloads exactly as you left it every time you reopen the screen, and the selected variant is the one used when correcting your texts in that language.
Important: two languages don't show a variant menu.
Italian has only one variant, so its row stays read-only.
French is handled through the existing typographic variant in your preferences, not from this tab.
