How do I write the content of a snippet?
How do I write the content of a snippet?

The Content field is the heart of your snippet: it's the text that automatically replaces your trigger. Right above it, a toolbar lets you go way beyond plain text — formatting, dynamic variables, fill-in fields and emojis.
To build your snippet's content, follow these steps:
- Open the Expand page, then create or edit a snippet.
- Click inside the Content field.
- Type your text, then use the toolbar to make it richer.
Format your text
The toolbar helps you structure and style your text:
- Bold (Ctrl+B, or Cmd+B on Mac)
- Italic (Ctrl+I, or Cmd+I on Mac)
- Underline (Ctrl+U, or Cmd+U on Mac)
- Bullet list and Numbered list
- Add a link: select some text, then enter the link address
- Undo and Redo to step back or forward
Tip: you can format everything straight from your keyboard. Check out "How do I format my snippet content with keyboard shortcuts?" for the full list.
Insert variables and dynamic fields
This is what makes your snippets truly powerful: instead of fixed text, drop in elements that adapt every time you use the snippet. Just click the matching button in the toolbar:
- Field (editable fields): add a field you'll fill in when you use the snippet.
- Single line: a short text box (a name, a reference…).
- Paragraph: a multi-line text box.
- Dropdown: a choice among options you set up in advance.
- Dates: insert today's date in the format you like — Full date (Wednesday 01 January 2025), Short date (01 January 2025), Numeric date (01/01/2025), Year, Short year, Month or Short month. The date is worked out automatically every time.
- Profile (personal information): drop in your own details automatically — First name, Last name, Full name, Email address or Company name.
- Clipboard content: inserts whatever you copied right before using the snippet.
- Optional section: add a block of text you can switch on or off when you insert the snippet.
Important: editable fields and optional sections open a small window when you use the snippet — you fill in the fields and pick which sections to keep before the final text drops in.
Add emojis
Click the Emoji button in the toolbar to open the picker. Browse emojis by category (Smileys, Animals & Nature, Objects, Symbols, Flags…) or use the Search box to find one by name. Click an emoji to insert it wherever your cursor is.
Insert an image
The Add an image button lets you drop an image straight into the content: drag and drop your file or pick it from your computer.
Pre-fill an email subject
You can also pre-fill an email subject with your snippet using the Add a subject button. Want to know more? Check out "How do I pre-fill an email subject with a snippet?".
Heads up: a live preview of your snippet shows up while you edit. If the preview becomes unavailable, make sure your fields and variables are properly closed.
