How to deploy the MerciApp browser extension to an entire company (GPO)?

It is possible to install the MerciApp extension on all your employees' browsers using a GPO procedure. To do this, contact your technical department/IT department and send them the link to this article.

Installing a browser extension using a GPO procedure

The method described below works on Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge browsers.

  • Open the Group Policy Editor as an administrator on a computer in the domain.
  • Create a new GPO or select an existing GPO that you want to modify.
  • Navigate to Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Edge (or Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox).
  • In the Microsoft Edge (or Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox) folder, locate the Manage Extensions policy.
  • Enable the Manage Extensions policy by selecting Enabled.
  • Click the Show... button to open the Add Extensions window.
  • In the Add Extensions window, enter the MerciApp extension ID; you can find the ID for our extension in the URL of the page on the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Store, or Firefox Add-on Store.
  • Close the Add Extensions window and save the changes made to the policy.
  • Apply the group policy to the desired computers or users.
  • Restart the computers or wait for the computers to synchronize with the GPO for the extensions to be installed on the browsers.

Session management on virtual desktops

Some work environments reset session data each time a user logs in. To prevent users from being disconnected from the MerciApp extension each time they log in to their work environment, it is necessary to retain browser cookies and local storage between sessions.

The folder containing local storage and the file containing cookies. Both are normally relatively small in size (< 2 MB).

Paths to keep:

  • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Local Storage\leveldb
  • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Network\Cookies

By restoring these two entities when you log in, the website is automatically connected; you can test this by opening Microsoft Edge after replacement, then going to https://web.merci-app.com/ (check that you were logged in before backing up the entities).
